It provides the kind of deep, transporting pleasure, at once simple and sophisticated, that movies at their best have always promised. Written and directed by Brad Bird and displaying the usual meticulousness associated with the Pixar brand, “Ratatouille” is a nearly flawless piece of popular art, as well as one of the most persuasive portraits of an artist ever committed to film. “But a great artist can come from anywhere.” Quite so. “Not everyone can be a great artist,” Mr. "The moral of “Ratatouille” is delivered by a critic: a gaunt, unsmiling fellow named Anton Ego who composes his acidic notices in a coffin-shaped room and who speaks in the parched baritone of Peter O’Toole.

But the bitter truth we critics must face i s that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. “In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. Remy pulls Linguini's hair to direct his hands, helping to bring Remy's creations to life. Together Remi and Linguini become a culinary duo, with Remy playing puppeteer by concealing himself under Linguini's chef's hat. While his guard is down, Remy is discovered by a klutzy young man, Linguini (Lou Romano), who cleans the kitchen.
One night, Remy can't resist practicing his skill in Gusteau's restaurant. Opting to raid the kitchens of Paris rather than the garbage cans and sewers of the city with his family, Remy is inspired by the philosophy of one of the city's most legendary chefs, the late Gusteau (Brad Garrett). A rat named Remy (Patton Oswalt) lives in Paris with a dream (and the talent) to be a chef.
